Dental Implants : The goal of modern dentistry is to restore the normal masticatory function i.e. important for chewing the food, comfort, esthetics, speech and health regardless of the disease or injury orofacial structures. As a result of continued research in treatment planning, implants are now successful for the rehabilitation of many challenging clinical situations.

The introduction of implants in the armamentarium of a dental surgeon increases the option available for the comprehensive management of patient needs.

What is dental implant??

Dental implant is a device which is surgically placed into the jaw bone to replace one or several lost teeth.

They are made of different metallic or non metallic materials.

Metallic-Aluminium oxide,Vitallium,Titanium

Nonmetallic-Hydroxyapatite

Where can we use dental implants

1. For people in whom all the teeth are missing, where if a denture with artificial teeth is given, it can be a failure because there will be less jaw bone to provide retention to the denture.

2. For single tooth placement where fixed partial denture cannot be placed.

3. In patients who do not have all their teeth missing, only few teeth are missing, and removable teeth if given for these, may weaken the other teeth from which support is going to be taken.

4. Teeth lost due to tumor or due to accident, implants can be placed as soon as it is appropriate from the psychosocial standpoint.

Advantages of dental implants

  1. The implants stimulate the growth of bone like a natural tooth and thus it prevents the further bone loss which occurs in the absence of tooth.
  2. Implants can be designed such that the effect of harmful forces that occur during chewing the food can be minimized.
  3. It also increases the efficiency of chewing that gives a feeling of natural presence of teeth.
  4. Implants provide the appearance of the natural tooth that emerges directly from the soft tissues.
  5. Implants are more stable and retentive than any other prosthesis.
  6. Implants are more comfortable than any other of the prosthesis.

Bases of evaluation of a patient for implant therapy

This includes medical, dental and diagnostic evaluation.

In medical evaluation patient is evaluated whether he is fit to undertake surgery or not. Medically compromised person who are unfit for surgical therapy are contraindicated. Examples are the endocrine disorders, heart diseases etc.

In dental evaluation bone density or thickness of bone is evaluated.

Diagnostic evaluation includes the various types of radiographs from which evaluation of the patient for implant therapy is made.

Limitations of Dental Implants

  1. Patient affordability is the primary concern in implant therapy. These are very expensive.
  2. Cannot be used in medically compromised person like in diabetic patient, heart patient etc.
  3. It is a very long duration treatment and mostly patient do not accept longer duration of treatment.
  4. It requires a lot of patient co-operation because repeated recall visits for after care is essential.
  5. Cannot be universally placed due to the presence of many anatomical limitations in the mouth.
  6. There can also be implant failure due to prosthetic component failure of implant.

Besides of many disadvantages, Dental Implants are most successful if proper precautions are taken during the implant therapy. Do you have any questions? Post it here and this online dentist will be happy to help you.
